Fall 2008 Event Series

Faculty Poetry Reading & Open Mic Night
A faculty poetry reading, featuring Dr. Frank Klapak, Dr. Albert Wendland, and Dr. Mike Arnzen.
You can read your own poetry at the following open mic session.
Tuesday, Dec. 9, 6:30-9:00p.m.
Greensburg Room

Behind the Books Cafe
A series that brings poets, lectures and speakers to the SHU campus.
The events are casual and intimate, and you can snack
on coffee-house style treats: coffee, tea, cookies & more.

The first Behind the Books Cafe featured three international poets: Nikola Madzirov of Macedonia, Maryam Ala Amjadi of Iran, and Rogelio Saunders of Cuba. The second Behind the Books Cafe brought Zimbabwean native and University of Pittsburgh Family Health professor Dr.Anamore M. Matambanadzo. Dr. Matambanadzo spoke on the Zimbabwean national crisis.

Afternoon Tea
The tea is a casual but scholarly conversation between students and a faculty member.
Each tea features a new faculty member, who covers a topic of their choosing.
Students are admitted by ticket only, which they can get free of charge from a WAF member.
These events are, of course, accompained by an assortment of teas, coffees, and snacks.

Foreign Film Series
The Foreign Film Series shows movies from several different countries.
The Series chairperson, Mary Clark, briefly introduces each film
and concludes each film with a discussion about the film and its cultural implications.

Passing the Torch, Homecoming 2008
Former SHU students and freshmen performed a candle lighting ceremony symbolizing the “passing” of social responsibility from former to current students.
Community business were also invited to campus, to mix, mingle, and network with students and alumni. The SHU Office of Alumni Relations co-sponsored this event.

Spring 2009 Event Series

In Spring 2009, WAF is restructuring old events and adding new events.

Art as Public Voice
Art as Public Voice will include all future poetry and performance events.

Global Perspectives
The Global Perspectives series will feature all speakers, panel discussions, lectures, Afternoon Teas and films. Specifically, the Foreign Film Series will become the Cultural Film Series. The Series will now feature English language films and focus on issues in American culture.

K16 Initiative
The K16 Initiative brings together high school students (grades K-12) and SHU students (grades 13-16).
The Initiative will be earmarked by a day of educational events for local high school students. We will invite the students to campus and they will meet with small groups of SHU students to hear presentations and learn the basics of fundraising. With this information, we hope students will then start fundraising projects in their own schools to support ventures like HEP and aid for Zimbabwe.

Special Projects
Special Projects leave room for any events not covered by our other series. An Arbor Day tree planting ceremony, a Japanese Tea Ceremony, and the construction of a SHU Unity Wall are just a few of the Special Projects WAF has in the works for Spring, 2009.
